I was once introduced by a fellow speaker at an AI event as “someone who knows everything there is to know about technology, and then some”. This generous statement was certainly a step up from my school days, where I was entirely disregarded by the teaching staff. Some years later, I became the first person from this particular school to get a Doctorate. This taught me the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people, taking charge of one’s own lifelong learning, and most of all, self-belief.
Over the last decade, marketing and technology have fully converged, bringing together my two core passions. I have built over 500 websites – personally and professionally – and have worked extensively in digital marketing for companies with budgets of over one million dollars across a range of channels. I have continually pushed the limits of Martech, and closely follow developments in analytics, Big Data, IoT, and most recently, AI for marketers. I also love building AI-powered chatbots!
My most recent work is in futures – also known as strategic foresight or visioning – which is the process of mapping the future of organisations and technology to 15-40 years out, creating scenarios, and then backcasting to the present to create strategy. Organisations should be asking: given technology is advancing exponentially, what is one thing that is impossible today, but if possible, changes everything? What capabilities do we need? Where do we want to be in 2025? Or 2035? What is our core vision? Those that work in this field are often referred to as ‘futurists’, though this term hasn’t yet caught on in New Zealand. I’m often asked to speak at events on this topic.
Beyond this, I enjoy growing businesses, designing technology-driven marketing strategies, and helping others to develop theirs. I always encourage Corporate Social Responsibility – companies help themselves by helping others – and I enjoy being actively involved in non-profit boards, something I shall continue to expand upon. I’m also an avid language learner, working towards fluency in up to eight languages.
If you would like to talk about the future of technology and business, or if you’re looking for a speaker/panelist on these topics, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to connect to smart, good-natured people.
